DrinkOne

A LUPEC + USBG Marathon Fundraiser

This May drinking establishments from Boston, Cambridge, and beyond will partner together for DrinkOne, a month-long, city-wide drink promotion. ALL profits of sales of DrinkOne drinks will be donated those affected by the tragic bombings at the finish line of the Boston Marathon April 15, 2013.

DrinkOne will allow Boston-area bartenders to show their support the best way they know how: by serving delicious drinks and donating all proceeds from their sales to victims of the Marathon bombings.

DrinkOne will be punctuated by a series of events to include a bar crawl, where guests will “race” from bar to bar to sample DrinkOne drinks while sporting specially made “running” shirts, arriving at a celebratory bash to mark the end of the promotion (venue TBD.)

The closing bash also a fundraiser, will feature a fabulous prize raffle, and silent auction. The total dollar amount raised during the course of the month at the closing party.

PARTICIPATING BARS

It’s easy to participate: simply designate a drink of your choosing, either newly added or an old faithful, as your DrinkOne cocktail. Proceeds from sales of that drink through May 31st will support those affected by the Marathon Bombings.

Stay tuned for a list of venues where you can drink for a cause this May!

Can’t make it to Boston to drink for a cause? Donate here!

BENEFICIARIES

DrinkOne will collect all donations through gofundme.com or via check written directly to the USBG Boston. Once the promotion is complete, DrinkOne will announce the dollar amount of funds raised, which will then be allocated as follows:

  • To support members of the service industry affected by the Marathon bombings

  • To support families affected by the Marathon bombings

*Recent ruminations from LUPEC Boston, as published in the Weekly Dig.

The holiday season is in full swing, and the ladies of LUPEC are throwing a party! Raising funds for local women’s charities is a major tenet of our mission. We hope you’ll join us for our Holiday Punch Party this Monday at Trina’s Starlite Lounge to benefit On the Rise, a Cambridge-based nonprofit that supports the initiative and strength of women living in crisis or homelessness.

In addition to mixing, mingling and drinking, we’ll also be holding a clothing drive. Come with an article of women’s clothing (especially winter wear, bras and undergarments) and we’ll trade you for a free drink ticket. Proceeds from drink sales will also be donated to On the Rise.

We’ll serve punch, snacks and specialty cocktails all night thanks to Bols Genever, St-Germain and others. And we’ll be taking this time to welcome three new members to our little LUPEC coven—Boston Bullet, Harvey Wallbanger and Amber Dream.

Holiday attire is encouraged and can be interpreted however you like—bring out your ugly Christmas sweater, your Three Wise Men beard or your little black cocktail dress.

Mix up one of these as you dig through your closet.

HARVEY WALLBANGER

1.5 oz Vodka

4 oz fresh-squeezed orange juice

Mix vodka and orange juice in an ice-filled highball. Float Galliano on top. Garnish with orange wedges.

*LUPEC Boston’s latest ruminations, in case you missed ‘em in this week’s Dig.

by Pink Lady

Regular readers of our column or blog are well aware of LUPEC’s mission to “breed, raise and release endangered cocktails into the wild,” spreading great stories, lore and cocktail history whenever we can. But another main initiative of this group is to give back to our community. Fabulous as we may be, most members of our little club will never be in a position to donate a wing to a local hospital or community center. Instead, we fundraise in the best way we know how: by throwing dress-up cocktail parties. We’ve raised over $20,000 for local women’s charities this way since our group’s inception in 2007.

Our first event was a 1920s-themed speakeasy held on a clandestine riverboat permanently docked in the Boston Harbor, and it benefited Jane Done Inc., the Massachusetts Coalition Against Sexual Assault and Domestic Violence. Last year, we threw a 1940s-themed USO-style variety show with swing dancing, burlesque and live comedy to benefit women at the New England Shelter for Homeless Veterans. This year, we’re planning a tiki bash of epic proportions.

On November 14th, we will transform the Villa Victoria Center for the Arts into a 1950s-themed tiki party featuring retro libations and canapés provided by Toro, Green Street, the Franklin Café and more. Island Creek Oysters will be on-hand shucking delicious “Duxbury pearls” and the Boston Derby Dames will skate around with sweets provided by Taza Chocolate. Through the Keyhole Burlesque, ukulele master Uke Springsteen, DJ Brother Cleve and other live acts will entertain. Tickets, a wallet-friendly $35 in advance/$45 at the door, are on sale now.

Why tiki in November? Why not? With exotic décor and whimsical cocktails, a night at Trader Vic’s or Don the Beachcomber’s offered un-ironic escapism in its heyday, a flavor-packed counterpoint in the era of vodkatinis and The Man in the Gray Flannel Suit. As tiki expert Jeff “Beach Bum” Berry told the Washington Post earlier this year, “A tiki bar was where the mid-century Organization Man went to escape his white-collar job, his big mortgage and the threat of nuclear annihilation.”

With a long cold winter on the horizon, we Bostonians could use a little escapism, too.
