Fascinating suggestions all. I came here fresh from the US Wodehouse Society's biennial convention in St. Paul, having regretted not following through on my plan to give the hotel's bartenders a list of vintage recipes to suggest to conventioneers. (As it turned out, I mostly guzzled champagne. A LOT of champagne.)

Anyhow, my own nomination for Best Beginner Cocktail (Gin category) is certainly the White Lady, which appears in one of the Wodehouse Playhouse episodes from the BBC (avl. from Netflix), but not, I believe in any actual Wodehouse writings.

Its original proportions are 1:1:1-- gin, Cointreau and lemon juice. That's a particularly deadly recipe, IMO, as it seems practically suitable for teetotallers, if you go by taste (or by jaded taste, I suppose). It comes off as a lovely lemonade! I prefer 2:1:1 myself, with gin as the 2-- that way you can sort of discern the gin. Basically a Sidecar with gin, obviously, but even friendlier for beginners, and a great lesson in the glory of gin for any "I only drink white wine" or "I only drink vodka" types.

Great list! I look forward to using some of these myself!

I think, though, that there was a transcription error in the next-to-last entry (for the Green Swizzle)--the Swizzle was tasty enough for Bertie (not Betty) Wooster to name his (not her) son after it.

The Wodehouse scene also, in fact, notes the usefulness of attractive scenery and intriguing bar-happenngs for enticing the newcomer:

"I had been able to observe that there was a sprightly sportsman nehind the counter mixing things out of bottles and stirring them up with a stick in long glasses that seemed to have ice in them, and the urge came upon me to see more of this man."
