I'm going to guess that "fruitless nausea" is when you feel sick but don't vomit. "Fruit salt", Google suggests, is an antacid popular in India, basically sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and citric acid, which is derived from citrus fruits and lends a tart flavor, presumbaly because baking soda by itself in water is pretty icky.

One more thing: the old cocktail book doesn't recommend you drink ammonia-based cleaning fluid, but a teaspoon of spirits of ammonia, a/k/a ammonium carbonate, once commonly used as smelling salts and still used by Nordic bakers as a leavening agent the way Americans use baking powder.

Little differences in chemistry are important: H20, good to drink, H2O2, bad (though useful if you want to go blonde). Likewise, NH3, poisonous (but helpful for cleaning windows); (NH4)2CO3, safe to ingest in small amounts (and in fact essential for proper Icelandic air biscuits.)

With the caveat that I'm not a doctor, one suggestion I'd make regarding the use of pre-emptive analgesics would be to shun acetaminophen (Tylenol) in favor of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like naproxen (Alleve), aspirin, or my favorite, ibuprofen (Advil).

That's because (as it says right on your bottle of Tylenol) it doesn't mix well with alcohol; the combination can lead to liver toxicity.

Cheers!

Great post Pink Lady! I can say in all honesty that the Doctors Tonic is the real deal. Although, I usually have a nice spicy Bloody Mary, I can definitely say the best that Ive tried is the Doc's Tonic. Although, I'm curious to try Fancy Brandy's cure...

The problem with our over-litigious society is that all these warning labels everywhere prevent the people who'd try ammonia as a hangover cure from giving it a shot. Natural selection is a fine thing and makes the world a better place; who are we to interfere with that sort of cosmic destiny?

No matter how much I comprehend that some hair of the dog will help the transition better, it always seems too debauched of a cure for me to try in the morning. I usually tough it out (although I have no problem killing off the last of the aches at night with another drink).

I generally stick with a routine of ginger ale (or ginger beer!) and advil, followed by rounds of coffee and water. And try to keep busy to take my mind off of things.
