Kaiser Penguin, I read about the white chartreuse on the chartreuse website: http://www.chartreuse.fr/pa_history3_uk.htm.

Here it is referenced as a “new liqueur” introduced by the monks after moving to their new, larger “Fourvoirie” distillery near the small village “Saint Laurent du Pont”. It was introduced in 1860 and produced until 1880, then again from 1886 – 1900. There’s no further explanation of the flavor profile of the stuff, or data about why they stopped or started making it — but I will pass it along if I can dig some up!
